Michael Spier started his career in the wheat industry 1992 with United Grain Corporation (UGC) in Portland, OR as a grain merchandiser trading soft white wheat both domestically and internationally. In 1997, he joined USW as assistant director of the West Coast Office. In 1998, Spier relocated to Cairo, Egypt, as assistant regional director for the Middle East and East Africa. In 2002, he transferred to Manila, Philippines, as assistant regional director for South and Southeast Asia. In 2009, Spier was promoted to regional vice president for South and Southeast Asia in Singapore. In 2015, Spier joined Columbia Grain International Inc. (CGI) as assistant vice president of international marketing and established CGI’s office in Singapore for trading international milling wheat. In 2018, Spier relocated to CGI’s headquarters in Portland, OR heading up CGI’s international wheat trading desk. In 2019, Spier rejoined USW as Vice President of Overseas Operations. Over his thirty years in the grain industry, Spier has gained experience in grain merchandising, international wheat trading, market analysis, risk management and hedging, logistics, execution, and negotiating ocean freight contracts. While with USW, Spier has traveled to more than 40 countries, implementing wheat export market development activities, providing insight into the U.S. and world wheat markets, and assisting buyers with wheat contract terms to meet price and quality expectations.

In his current position, he is responsible for Cargill's shipping business in the Americas. Jan-Willem joined Cargill in 1996 as a grain trader in Chile. He has held successfully in grain trading roles at Cargill's corporate headquarters in Minneapolis and in Miami. In 2004, he moved to the Panamax desk of Cargill's shipping business in Geneva, Switzerland before becoming manager of Cargill's Americas Handy desk. In 2011, he joined the New Jersey office as commercial director for the Americas. In 2014, he was promoted to his current position as head of the Americas. He completed the moving the Shipping activities from New Jersey to Miami in 2021. In January 2018, he was appointed Cargill's board representative to the North American Marine Environmental Protection North American Marine Environmental Protection Association.
